Meet Our In-House Counsel: Brandon Prince, Esq.

FAQs with the Attorney Behind the Mission at School Psych AI

Q1: Who are you, and what do you do at School Psych AI?

ree

Hi! I’m Brandon Prince, the in-house legal counsel at School Psych AI. I advise the company on intellectual property, data privacy compliance (especially FERPA and COPPA), and legal strategy around AI governance. I also support product and policy decisions with embedded legal insight and prepare legal thought leadership content monthly.

Q2: What’s your legal background?

I’m a licensed attorney in the state of Texas and earned my Juris Doctor from Thurgood Marshall School of Law with honors. My legal focus is on intellectual property, artificial intelligence, and education privacy law. In addition to my work at School Psych AI, I also work as a staff attorney for the Houston Legal Aid Center, developing programs and providing diverse legal services for the poor and vulnerable within the southwestern region of the city.

Q3: What led you to this role?

I have a strong technical background, including two years at Apple as a technical specialist and a dual undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry from Howard University. During law school, I served as treasurer on the board of the Intellectual Property Law Society and did early research on the various intersections between intellectual property law and emerging technologies like AI and large language models. The combination of tech, law, and education made School Psych AI a natural fit.

Q4: What makes School Psych AI’s mission meaningful to you?

My late father, who was a criminal defense attorney, encouraged me to find diverse ways to use my skills to advocate for the underserved and marginalized. School Psych AI allows me to do just that while staying grounded in my passions for intellectual property and data privacy.

It also challenges me to grow in my understanding of the vast possibilities within EdTech and AI. I became a licensed attorney right around the time School Psych AI was founded, and I’ve felt a natural sense of alignment and partnership with Byron, our CEO.

Q5: What areas of law are you passionate about?

Definitely intellectual property, AI governance, and education law. I’m also deeply engaged in tech ethics and data privacy, especially when AI is used in sensitive spaces like schools.

Q6: What’s one thing most people don’t know about the legal side of startups?

Startups often underestimate how crucial early compliance and IP protection can be. Having a strong legal infrastructure from the outset saves time, protects innovation, and builds trust. For example, I’ve facilitated our work with iKeepSafe to pursue their FERPA and COPPA compliance seal, which helps us ensure that our platform meets the highest standards of student data protection.

Q7: What are your goals in this role?

To ensure that School Psych AI remains a national leader in AI-driven school psychology services, legally secure, privacy-forward, and ethically sound. I also want to help the company scale by securing trademarks, supporting contracts, and navigating emerging regulations.

Q8: Any fun facts?

I’m a singer! I am the President of ConnectedHTX, a Christian nonprofit organization based here in Houston that aims to provide practical and spiritual resources for young adults in the city while encouraging Christian fellowship within the community at large. I also love researching word origins, writing creatively, and finding new ways to combine faith, tech, and service.
